Family and sexual violence (FSV) in the workplace is a serious issue that undermines employee wellbeing, performance, and productivity. Addressing FSV is vital, and this is where the Bel isi PNG program plays a critical role—providing employees with access to the support they need.

Bel isi PNG is a unique public–private–civil society partnership designed to help businesses respond to FSV in the workplace. Companies that subscribe to Bel isi enable their employees and families to access case management services and a range of support packages.

On 16 June 2025, Newmont Gold Mining—the world’s leading gold and copper producer—officially joined the initiative, launching the Bel isi PNG program in Lihir. This milestone demonstrates Newmont’s commitment to addressing family and sexual violence among its workforces.

As an implementing partner of Bel isi PNG, Femili PNG was honoured to represent the program at this significant event. The launch coincided with Women in Mining Day, where women representatives from Newmont departments showcased their contributions. During the information-sharing session, Renat Muruket, Femili PNG’s Communications and PR Manager, presented on the Bel isi PNG program, workplace harassment, and pathways for employees to seek support. Renat also distributed Bel isi booklets containing information on FSV, legal services, male support, referral contacts, and case management services.

The launch was led by Newmont’s Human Resource Operations Department. Jacqueline Waka, Director Lead Lihir – HR Operations, opened the ceremony with a speech highlighting the importance of Bel isi PNG. She clarified that the program complements, rather than replaces, Newmont’s existing Respect at Work program, and emphasized their commitment to working together to safeguard employee welfare.

“We are happy—the referral pathway in Lihir will be strengthened through this program,” said one female employee.

Other employees echoed similar sentiments, noting that many staff face FSV and urgently need support. They expressed gratitude to Newmont for recognizing this need and taking action.

With this launch, Newmont joins 20 other companies that have subscribed to Bel isi PNG, collectively working to address family and sexual violence in the workplace.
