Femili PNG was established to help survivors of family and sexual violence get the support they need. By working closely with our service delivery partners, we help survivors access basic services, secure emergency accommodation, obtain a restraining order, or relocate to somewhere safer. We also undertake training, partner resourcing and outreach.
We began operations in July 2014 in Lae. We opened a new case management centre (CMC) in Port Moresby in 2018 under the Bel isi PNG public-private partnership, where we also operate the Bel isi safe house; and a third CMC in Goroka in 2021. Over the last decade, we have extended assistance to over 7,000 survivors.
Femili PNG is a proudly Papua New Guinean NGO. Our eminent Board, experienced management and professional staff are our biggest asset. We are client-oriented and results-focused. With a staff of 65, we are one of the largest NGOs and female-managed organisations in the country. Our published, up-to-date annual reports and audits promote transparency and accountability.
We are extremely proud to be celebrating our 10th Anniversary in 2024. Femili PNG works in partnership with many service providers and funders, making this a celebration of collective effort.
Timeline of Operations
2013: Femili PNG is created and registered as an Incorporated Association with PNG IPA.
2014: Funding is first received from the PNGAus Partnership – and continues to this day (first via Oxfam, then Pacific Women, then PNG Women Lead).
25 July 2014: We receive our first survivor at our Lae Case Management Centre (CMC).
2015: First team of Femili PNG and partner staff head to the Philippines for training.
2015: We create Friends of Femili PNG (now FemiliPNG Australia or FPNGA) as an Australian support organisation.
2016: We start our first provincial engagement, in Hela, with OSF’s support.
2017: We move to a secure office in Lae able to admit walk-in clients (thanks Newmont!)
2017: We organise a speaking tour for Rosie Batty in PNG.
2018: We establish our outreach department.
2018: We start our second CMC in Port Moresby as operator for the Bel isi PNG public-private partnership, and start operating the Bel isi Safe House as well.
2019: We begin moving our client data system (securely) online.
2020: We commence work as an implementing partner for the EU/UN Spotlight Program with a focus on the Highlands.
2020: We begin working with KTF in Oro Province.
2020: We start receiving PNG government funding.
2021: We open the Goroka CMC with UN Spotlight and then FPNGA funding.
2022: A new Seventh Day Adventist safe house opens in Lae, built with Femili PNG assistance.
2023: Our new Case Management System is launched (thanks FPNGA!).
By the Numbers
Femili PNG has offices in three provinces: NCD, Lae and Eastern Highlands. We have so far conducted outreach and training in 11 provinces; and our clients come from every one of PNG’s 22 provinces.
Since we started, we have taken in more than 7,000 survivors as clients, and assisted over 20,000 clients and dependents. 83% of our clients are adult women; 9% are female children; 5% are male adults; and 3% are male children.
When we first started, we received about 30 new clients every month. Now it is almost 90.
At any one time, we support about 900 survivors, and each case worker is working with about 60 survivors. On any night, we are supporting more than 80 clients with emergency accommodation.
Every month, we help about 20 survivors obtain an Interim Protection Order.
In 2022-23, Femili PNG reached 14,927 individuals through 96 awareness-raising sessions across PNG. Also in that year, we delivered 10 training sessions to 297 community leaders, service providers and Femili PNG staff.
