UNFPA is Keen to Increase Support to Fight Gender-Based Violence Under the Partnership with Femili PNG

The United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA) Representative for Papua New Guinea, Ms. Saira Shameem, commended Femili PNG for collaborating with partners in Simbu to address the urgent issue of gender-based violence (GBV).

In the recent meeting with the Simbu service providers in Kundiawa on 27 March 2025, Ms. Saira – after hearing feedback from the service providers – expressed her appreciation to Femili PNG (FPNG) for bringing service providers together and empowering them.

“Thank you Femili PNG. The partnership you created with UNFPA and the Simbu service providers attracted attention and potentially attract more funding. We will definitely discuss and review our current partnership agreement with Femili PNG and see what program to collaborate further.”

Ms. Shameem thanked the service providers for helping her understand their current practices and challenges. The service providers included: Family Support Centre, Sexual Offence Squad (SOS), Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Kup Women for Peace, Community Development, Disability rep, Court, Human Rights Defenders, Kundiawa Catholic Diocese (Caritas), Family and Sexual Violence Unit (FSVU). 

Present with her at the meeting were representatives from the Korea International Corporation Agency (KOICA), Stella Dermofoniadi,  Edith Akiror (GBV Technical Specialist), Pamela Paul (National Program Associate), Suleiman Okoth (Communications Specialist), Ms. Daisy Plana (Femili PNG CEO), Elsie Tomili (UNFPA/FPNG Program Manager), and Renat Muruket (Femili PNG Communications and PR Manager).

In her closing remarks, the meeting Chairlady, Elsie Tomili, thanked the UNFPA and KOICA representatives for taking the time to visit Simbu and for their valuable discussions with the partners.
